Jose Chirinos

Hi, Jose from Group three here. My experience with the presentation went really well and easier than I

thought. I missed the first two classes, so I had to try a little harder to understand the presentation, but I

had a very engaging and responsible group to help me throughout. Since I missed the first two classes I

really didn’t have a choice to pick the words I wanted but the words I did get were still a pretty good set

of words. Once I finally bought the book, it was relatively easy to find out the definitions of the words

given to me. Thank God the professor put me in Group 3 since they had to present last, so I had more

time to finish my PowerPoint slides. Once I saw Group 1 and Group 2 present, I felt like I had a better

understanding of what I needed to have in my presentation since I was expecting to just read out the

definition of the three words I have been assigned.

I liked working with this group because they motivate me to be more hands on in class. I’ve realized how

their efforts have motivated me into dedicating myself to my work. I’m grateful for my group because

they have helped me with any questions or doubt that I had. We created a WhatsApp group chat where

we can discuss any topics we may not have understood and links to find the book to find the definitions

of the words. I also think the presentations from the other groups were amazing and taught me a lot.

I’ve learned about different types of roles given in group settings. In a group there is always a giver a

seeker and an analyzer, and I believe that these three play an important role in our society.

The presentations also taught me about the other roles in a group like the leaders, team players,

coaches, facilitators, and creative directors. Leaders is the most important role where they come up with

the ground rules which Valery was a part of. Creative directors help develop unique and out of the box

ideas. They always have out of the box ideas and plans. Facilitators help in the decision-making process

of the team and is also responsible for helping the team understand their objectives and goals. The

coach provides one on one support to the members of the group and the first person the members

should approach. Team players is the last role and all they do is help the leaders and work on their tasks

and objectives.

When I presented, I was very nervous since I did not think I had enough to have a good presentation. I

kept going back and forth on what to talk about and how to say it. It took a couple days to finish my

presentation since I wanted to make sure I knew what to say since I’m not good at presentations;

especially having to present through the computer. Our professor assigned my group with the chapter

on leadership and their roles. I learned a lot about the different leadership roles and problems leaders

deal with. The words assigned to me were comprehensive report, executive summary, and oral briefs.

Comprehensive reports are intended to explore a topic or an idea in detail. Comprehensive reports are

very useful in business settings since they can discuss a business financial situation which is very helpful

for me since I want to own a business in the future. The presentation made me realize how much we

need leadership roles as part of our mindsets so we can strive to be as successful as possible and I know

I will use these skills in the near future. The other word I learned the meaning of is Executive summary.

Executive summary is basically a shorten version of the comprehensive report. And finally Oral briefs is

the executive summary but spoken orally in a group setting which lasts up to ten minutes. Oral briefs are

helpful since you learn how to pronounce and annunciate words to seem more formal or professional

especially in a business setting. Oral briefs have helped me the most personally since I tend to struggle

with pronouncing words sometimes. The more oral briefs I do, the more comfortable I get in presenting

and speaking to big groups and in public settings.

Having a speech class online can be stressful sometimes since there can be many distractions at home.

There will be some occasions where my family will have people over and it can be distracting since it

tends to get loud. On another note this is my first year in college as well as my time doing online classes

since I graduated from high school right before COVID started. One thing I do like about having speech

class online is that I get to present in the comfort of my own home instead of standing in front of a big

classroom. I also have the privilege of not having to drive back and forth from home to school so I’m

able to save money on gas.

Overall, I had a very good experience with this presentation, and I can’t wait for the next assignment we

have to present. I feel very comfortable with the classmates and the professor is so helpful and always

answers any questions we have. It was definitely a learning experience and I’m glad I have this group

this whole semester to help me. Everyone was cooperative and we didn’t have anyone slacking or not

able to finish the assignment, which is a good example of a good team player. I can see the progression

from the beginning of the semester where we didn’t talk much and were shy to ask questions to now

helping each other out even when we don’t ask and that is because of our amazing leaders. I think I

filled the role of a good team player by finishing the assignment before it was even due.
