Nicole Maza #2
Hello everyone, my name is Nicole Maza-Perez. I attend Miami Dade College and today I am going to talk about my experience and thoughts in the presentation we had to do for Professor Sinkoff in her speech class. As you guys may remember from my previous blog, we were assigned our topics from the chapters from our textbook. In our second group presentation we did a theme presentation. We had three different groups and each group had around eleven to twelve people. This time it was different, last project group one presented first and group three presented last but now group three presented first and group one presented last. This presentation Group three which was my assigned group discussed about Infrastructure, Group two discussed about Gender Inequality, and Group one discussed Climate Change. We had multiple duties to do in this project. We had to do a powerpoint, a brochure, agenda, and a study guide. The powerpoint was full of useful information, pictures, videos, statistics, jeopardy and polls. The brochure is an informative paper that can be a pamphlet and many other things. The agenda is the main and most important part, the agenda consists of the format of the presentation and subtopics it is separated into who does what. Finally, the study guide, the study guide consists of vocabulary from the chapters that each group was assigned.
The first to present was group three which is my group. At first we faced some difficulties. We had some classmates dropped the class which so happened to be in our group and this made is more difficult for my group because we had to do double the work some classmates we missing a member so they had to do more work but it is okay because in the end we were able to do it like a strong group that we are! The first thing our classmates were introduced to was the introduction, we also has a bit of difficultly with that because the class leader was supposed to introduce the introduction but they did not join the class so they were not able to do the introduction so my group leader had to do the introduction last minute. Then we introduced our classmates with the definition of what infrastructure is (Public works of a country, state, and a region.). Then we continued talking about the importance of infrastructure and how important highways, bridges and airports are. While i was researching for my slides I found this interesting fact that there was a fund created in 1956 called Highway Trust Fund (HTF), it was created to fund the creation of the interstate highway system. The HTF raises money through the gas tax (which has not increased in over two decades) and other transportation-related taxes. It spends about 80 percent of that money on roads and highways and the remainder on mass transit projects. An interesting fact about highways is that highways help reduce manufacturing and distribution costs in the large domestic market, which, in turn, makes U.S. products more competitive in world markets. This increases employment and, by making the U.S. a lower cost economy, allows its citizens to purchase more with their earnings. I really enjoyed how much time and effort my teammates put into their slides. They used really interesting facts and statistics and I actually learned some stuff that I did not know before. For example, "over 60 percent of the state's infrastructure spending was borrowed using bonds. Most of these bonds are repaid from the states General Fund, which is its main operating account." I totally did not know that at all and i found that fact so interesting. My group in the end did jeopardy and that was really fun and fun/interesting to see peoples answers and see what they had to say. I really enjoyed working with my group and for the fact that we had 2 less people I think we did a pretty great job, especially since we had the least amount of time.
Finally, Group one. This group had presented the topic climate change. A very big issue that has been going on for years. These slides were very pretty and very informative. I believe in climate change so I was excited on what my classmates had to say and see their different views. We were introduced with what climate change means right in the first slide (the long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns). I was informed with many things that I never really knew. For example, "Rich countries, including the United States, Canada, Japan, and much of western Europe are responsible for 50% of all the planet-warming greenhouse gasses released from fossil fuels and industry over the past 170 years." Never would I have thought that rich countries would of been responsible for 50% of the planet warming greenhouse gasses released, I thought that since they are rich there would not have any problems. The shift in temperatures worsens a the amount of weather disasters. For example, storms, heat waves, floods, and droughts. Thanks to group ones amazing slides and how they had each slide full of useful information and interesting facts, I learned so much that I did not know before. I was really amazed with how well they work together. I was very impressed. Group one had a jeopardy as well. The jeopardy was fun and refreshed me with some information that I may have missed.Next, group two had presented which was Gender Inequality. This group was personally my favorite and I wish I had this group because this topic has some much to it. This group took two classes to present. They also has a jeopardy which was really fun and entertaining I enjoyed seeing what type of questions the class leader had put and seeing what answers classmates put. The different subtopics that this group had came up with was the Introduction to Gender Inequality & Societal Mindset, Pay Wages/Prestigious Positions, Sport, Sexual Harassment, Mental Health/Healthcare, Government/Education, and the LGBTQ+ Community. They covered so many important topics and I learned so much from this presentation that I did not know before. They had an interview with Manuel Rosa, who is the pride advisor from the Hialeah campus for MDC. This interview was so heart warming to me and I really enjoyed what he had to say and I felt so sorry for him with what happened to him. I learned what the whole meaning of LGBTQ+ is, L, lesbians, G- gay, B- bisexual, T- transgender, Q- queer, I- intersex, and last but not least, A- Ally which is asexual. I was so happy to finally know the whole meaning and what each word is. “Nationwide, 81% of women and 43% of men reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment and/or assault in their lifetime.” This is so sad and sickening to me that this many people have experienced this. I feel so bad for the people that have experienced this, this is probably so traumatizing and heartbreaking. This group was very informative and I learned so much.

Well I certainly enjoyed reading your blog! Great job!
